Israeli Attacks on Syria Kill 7 and Destroy the Airport in Aleppo

Four Syrian officers and three fighters supported by Iran were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Aleppo province in northern Syria overnight, according to a war monitor, who also said the area's international airport was shut down.

Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian territory during the course of the country's more than ten-year conflict, mostly focusing on Iranian-backed troops, Lebanese Hezbollah combatants, and Syrian army locations.

Israeli missiles allegedly hit the neighbouring Nayrab military airfield and the Aleppo international airport late on Monday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which also reported explosions and "severe damage" at both locations.

Four Syrian army commanders and "three pro-Iran foreign fighters," according to the Britain-based monitor, who relies on a broad network of contacts on the ground, were killed in the strikes that "completely destroyed" a munitions warehouse in the Nayrab airport region.

Additionally, Syrian air force factories in the Safireh region of Aleppo province were hit by Israeli missiles, the statement said, "causing extensive material damage," and pro-Iran fighters were known to frequent the locations.

According to the Observatory and official media, the Aleppo airport was destroyed by the attacks.

The facility's anticipated reopening date and the specifics of the damage were not immediately made clear by officials.

According to a military source cited by official news agency SANA, "the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack with several missiles... targeting Aleppo international airport and a number of sites in the vicinity of Aleppo" at approximately 11:35 p.m. (2035 GMT).

According to SANA, who reported "material losses," "a soldier was killed and seven people, including two civilians, were injured."

Aleppo and Damascus airports have both been rendered inoperable by prior Israeli assaults.

Israel has frequently stated it will not permit its arch-enemy Iran to expand its influence in the conflict-torn nation, despite the fact that it seldom remarks on the strikes it conducts on Syria.

Due to their crucial ground assistance in the army's 2016 recapture of rebel-held areas of the city, Iran-backed militias are heavily present in the Aleppo region.

The Observatory said at the time that on March 22, an Israeli missile attack at Aleppo Airport damaged what was believed to be an armaments store used by militias supported by Iran. Authorities claimed that the raid rendered the airport inoperable.
