Muhammad Osman Hussein, the chief of staff of the army, is killed?

News reports suggest that Sudanese army chief of staff Mohammed Osman Hussein has been assassinated outside his residence in the capital, Khartoum. Have the authorities in Sudan confirmed his death?

No. But if the reports come true, his death would be a severe setback to the efforts of bringing civilian rule in Sudan. Hussein played a crucial role in the transitional government which has been working to steer Sudan towards democracy since the 2019 military coup that toppled Omar al- Bashir's regime.

It may even disrupt ongoing efforts to achieve peace in the country as a deadly conflict has been raging in Sudan for 12 days now. It is crucial for the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
