UN urges justice efforts in Libya as the war crimes investigation comes to a close

As a war crimes investigation came to an end on Monday, the UN rights head urged Libyan officials and the international community to step up efforts to ensure accountability in the nation.

Volker Turk warned: "Libyan officials, armed groups, smugglers, and human traffickers should not presume that the international community's eyes have now turned away from Libya. "It is essential that we step up our efforts to ensure accountability for past violations and keep an eye on the situation on the ground to stop violations in the future."

The so-called UN Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Libya, established by the UN Human Rights Council in 2020, was winding up when Turk made his remarks. He also turned over its archives and the proof it had gathered to his office in Geneva. Instead of extending the inquiry, the rights council is anticipated to approve a resolution this week that only requests the UN to offer "technical assistance" in enhancing Libya's human rights situation.

The fact-finding expedition expressed grave worry about the deteriorating human rights situation in the conflict-torn nation of North Africa in its final report, which was released last week.
