Saied of Tunisia makes a public comeback and rejects irrational rumours
Following nearly two weeks of no public appearances, Tunisian President Kais Saied debunked "mad" rumours about his health in a video shared on his official Facebook page on Monday.
The major opposition group in the nation of North Africa had previously demanded an explanation from the government for Saied's apparent "absence" from public life, claiming to have knowledge that he was ill.
Regarding his political opponents, Saied said in the recording, "These people deserve nothing but contempt."
"A power vacuum results from the president's absence for two to three days due to a cold,"
According to posts on Facebook, which serves as the only formal means of contact for the presidency, Saied, 65, hasn't conducted any meetings or made any public appearances since March 22.
Saied's health has been the subject of rumours due to the absence of statements or recordings.
The president claimed that the accounts revealed "a level of madness never seen before in Tunisia" while speaking with Prime Minister Najla Bouden.
We urge the government to address the Tunisian people and state if the president has health issues that have caused him to be missing, Ahmed Nejib Chebbi of the National Salvation Front opposition alliance told media earlier on Monday.
