Amid strengthening relations, the foreign ministers of Egypt and Turkey meet in Cairo

Egypt's foreign minister said talks with Turkey on the potential of restoring relations to ambassadorial level will happen at "the opportune moment," during the first visit to Cairo by Ankara's top diplomat since ties collapsed a decade ago.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced during a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry that Turkey will "as soon as feasible" raise its diplomatic ties with Egypt to ambassadorial status.

"I'm delighted to see that we're moving towards restoring relations with Egypt... We will work hard to maintain our relationships in the future, Cavusoglu stated.

According to the favourable outcomes it produces, Shoukry stated: "We will come to negotiations (on reinstating ambassadors) at the proper moment."

After Mohamed Mursi, a supporter of Ankara and leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, was overthrown by Egypt's then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in 2013, relations between the two countries became very tense.

Last month, Shoukry visited Turkey in a display of sympathy following the huge earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

The two nations have also been at war recently over maritime borders in the gas-rich Eastern Mediterranean and Libya, where they supported opposite forces in an unresolved battle. In 2021, talks between Cairo and Ankara's top foreign ministry officials began.

The Egyptian government said last month that Turkish businesses had committed to making $500 million in new investments in Egypt. Egypt has been working to handle a severe foreign currency deficit.
